Michigan University is the first in the nation to offer a cannabis scholarship

Michigan’s colleges and universities are known for being groundbreaking, so this should come as no surprise.

It was only last year that Lake Superior State University launched the country’s first chemistry program that was solely focused on the subject cannabis when it launched the Cannabis Center of Excellence. Now the university in northern Michigan is “first” again offering a scholarship for its cannabis chemistry program.

A Michigan-based company has established a $ 1200 annual scholarship for students pursuing a degree in cannabis chemistry. The Hazel Park-based company, Steadfast Labs, welcomed the first ever grant of its kind to CBS News.

“It is with great pleasure that we are awarding this unprecedented grant to a cutting-edge program in an innovative industry,” said Avram Zallen, Founder and CEO of Steadfast Labs. “This scholarship is another opportunity for Steadfast to help LSSU students advance careers in this exciting and important industry.”

Currently, Lake Superior State University offers two different cannabis-related degrees. The cannabis chemistry degree is the first degree program in the United States to focus on cannabis-related compounds. Students can earn either an associate or a bachelor’s degree in the field of study.

The university said working with Steadfast Labs was as groundbreaking as the degree of study itself.

“This donation not only continues our pioneering paths in this important new area, but also makes our already affordable tuition fees even more reasonable,” said Dr. Steven Johnson, Dean of the LSSU College of Science and Environment. “By funding this grant, Steadfast Labs is once again showing its commitment to helping future chemists enter the workplace and ensure public safety in the cannabis sector.”

Those students who wish to apply for a specialty scholarship must be in their sophomore year or older and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The school also offers a degree in cannabis business for individuals who wish to be managers, supervisors, or other related business occupations in the cannabis business industry. You can find out more about the course here.
