NJ Towns Leave Little Room For Cannabis Law’s Social Goals


By Bill Wichert (March 15, 2022, 6:55 PM EDT) — Garden State municipalities have created a narrow playing field for cannabis businesses that could derail the state’s social equity vision of building a diverse recreational marijuana market and leave minorities, women and other entrepreneurs on the sidelines, experts and advocates say.

Although it remains unclear when adult-use cannabis sales will commence in New Jersey, the state kicked off another round of license applications on Tuesday, and those social equity applicants – including people who have cannabis-related convictions or live in economically disadvantaged areas – are supposed to go to the front of the line in the review process.
